I read that alcohol can increase stress?

I was Reading an article about anxiety disorder which I have and it said that caffeine and alcohol increase your heartbeat so may bring on a panic attack, therefore I don't drink/ eat anything with caffeine in it(even paracetemol tablets) and I don't touch alcohol, is any of this normal/true?:')

Alcohol is a double edged sword. Initially, alcohol releases endorphins, feel good hormones. This makes you feel relaxed, calm, euphoric, sleepy. But as alcohol gets processed by the liver, it releases toxins into the blood stream and these toxins, rather than the alcohol, actually can increase blood pressure.

But more importantly, because you're body sees these chemicals as "toxins" it releases stress hormones. These are what cause hang overs. And when you drink in excess, basically your sleep is cut in half. So even if you sleep 8 hours, to your body, it is as though you only slept 4. Thus more stress on your body. More stress, means more anxiety and that can indeed lead to panic attacks.

What can happen with some prone to anxiety, they realize alcohol can calm their anxiety until it wears off. And they learn to self medicate with alcohol and can become full blown alcoholics. In fact, one of the biggest challenges for recovering alcoholics is dealing with stress and anxiety. When they were drunk all the time, they didn't have to deal with their problems. But getting sober means learning to over come real life issues. Including anxiety.

One thing to be clear about, however, is that drinking in moderation does not necessarily increase anxiety. Actually, having a glass of red wine a day can reduce your risk for cancer and heart disease. beer contains B vitamins that are essential for immune function and the production of certain hormones. The key word is moderation. And by that I mean no more than the equivalent of three beers 5% AC a day.

Caffeine is a completely different bag of bells and whistles. Wear alcohol depresses the central nervous system, caffeine stimulates it. Although caffeine does cause the body to release dopamine, your main pleasure hormone, if used in excess, your body eventually depletes its dopamine. In extreme cases you even become hypersensitive to it - to the point where enough caffeine can land you in the hospital. As a stimulant, however, caffeine can increase stress hormones and people who are prone to anxiety or panic attacks find an increase in those conditions if they take in too much caffeine.

Same is true for nicotine. And yes some paracetamol pills like Excedrin do contain caffeine as an anti-inflammatory; to help with head aches especially. And if you are prone to anxiety or panic attacks, you certainly don't want to mess with marijuana either.
