What should I do about my social anxiety disorder?
I am a freshmen in college this year and I am pretty sure I have social anxiety disorder. I don't really want to talk to my parents about seeing a psychiatrist to get medication. I don't have insurance or anything but I would be willing to spend some money to go to a psychiatrist and get meds. How should i approach this situation and how much would it cost to see a psychiatrist and get antidepressants?

Anti-depressants don't work for anxiety. Never have. And tranquilizers lose their effect.
I had anxiety my whole life and I now know where the problem is. Idiot US psychiatrists.
In Europe they have finally approved Gaba-meds like: Gabitril, Neurontin and Lyrica all for long-term anxiety control and elimination.
I had to fight for years to finally get the Gabitril and in a few months I felt much better and in a year it was long gone and the drug is safe and does not stop working like tranquilizers.
Psychiatrists in the US still believe that depression causes anxiety. It's the other way around: You can get depressed from having anxiety for too long.
Do a search with the words: Europe, Anxiety and any of the 3 meds: Neurontin, Lyrica and Gabitril. and see hat you get.
You will get articles of Europe finally giving permission for these meds to be used on anxiety.
I finally got a doc to get me on Gabitril. THANK GOD! The other 2 have side effects like weight gain, but the Lyrica works the fastest; in 9 days for my sister! She loves it. They were originally made as anti-seizure meds and then noticed that all these people's anxiety vanished.

US sucks on this topic, so you have to show them proof about these gaba meds and just ask to try one. Each one feels totally different, so if you hate one don't stop, but try another one.
Gabitril takes 6 months, but no side effects except getting a good night's sleep, as you take it at night. It is a miracle pill.
Complain about your anxiety until they finally get fed up and give you a gaba med. That's the only way to get it until the US catches up with Europe.
I had anxiety all my life and never knew it until it got fixed and boy was I mad to find that I could've lived my entire life without being afraid! Fight for your right to have ZERO anxiety.
Print out your research and show it to the doc and beg to try it and give it time.
Lyrica worked for my sister in 9 days, but I gained 10 pounds on it, so I went back to my favorite, Gabitril.
Also, Gabitril was recently tested and shown to NOT work for anxiety, but the dang test was only 6 weeks long!!! I wrote to the protocol/ test director and told him off for making up such a stupid test.
It does work just as good, it just takes longer with good side effects and no weight gain.
But I have to now add that Gabitril has been taken off for use of anxiety in the US as a couple people had a seizure. I love it and will always take it, because the sides effects are all positive.
